Just as you may be dreaming of spring during this snowy and icy winter, farmers too are looking forward to warmer weather. For them, it means production will go into full swing — some may even be starting seeds right now! But getting farm fresh veggies to market involves more than the right weather. That’s where CSAs come in.
CSA (or community supported agriculture) is an arrangement between farmer and customer that helps make the farmer’s job easier and ensures that customers get their share of the harvest. Indeed, when you join a CSA, it’s often called buying a share for that very reason. By giving a farmer money upfront, you provide funds necessary to get the growing going. Then, as fresh produce comes into season, you reap the rewards of your investment. It’s a definite win-win.
February 22 is CSA Day, so if you’re thinking about joining, today’s a great day to make the leap! Future you will thank you.
Here are some farms in Centre County that offer CSA shares. Check csaday.info for even more information about CSAs as well as listings of farms that offer CSAs across the country.
